Arrive at Hoehyeon

Archival Namdaemun Market entrance

Take Seoul Line 4 to Hoehyeon, also signed Namdaemun Market, and follow Exit 5 for the market approach. The station is different from Seoul Station and Myeongdong, even though both are nearby on the same line.

  • If travelling with a pushchair or heavy luggage, consult the station lift map first. The shopping streets are busy and individual station exits do not all offer the same accessibility.

Choose a fare card

Use an ordinary subway ticket or supported stored-value card for the journey. Enter and leave through the appropriate ticket gates, keeping enough balance for the exit fare.

  • An optional airport-pickup Tmoney card is linked below. Check terminal, counter hours and whether balance is included. It is neither a market entry ticket nor an unlimited subway pass; local purchase may suit visitors already in Seoul.

Save the entrance

At street level, identify the market entrance and save its location before entering the shopping lanes. A market gate number and Hoehyeon Station Exit 5 are separate numbering systems.

  • The archive photos help show the scale of the streets, not an exact currently open shop. Keep to walking space, let delivery traffic pass and avoid stopping in narrow doorways.

Find the noodle alley

Archival market signs and shops, not a specific noodle stall

For kalguksu, search for Namdaemun Kalguksu Alley near the Exit 5 approach rather than choosing any restaurant merely because it displays noodles. The official tourist guide identifies this as a distinct alley.

  • Before sitting, ask the stall about the current set, price and included side dishes. Seating and payment rules differ. Do not assume old menu photos show today's price or that every stall accepts the same card.

Return to the station

After shopping, use your saved entrance point to find Hoehyeon Station again. Inside, check your next station: Seoul Station and Myeongdong are opposite directions from Hoehyeon.

  • Shop hours vary by building and business; the whole market is not uniformly open all night. Leave extra time to pack purchases and locate the correct entrance instead of following a different underground-shopping sign at random.
