Shinjuku-sanchome F13 station sign

The Fukutoshin Line starts this trip at Shinjuku-sanchome F13, not the JR Shinjuku gates. If you are already at JR, compare its Yamanote option with the walk to the subway.

  • Save your hotel’s actual entrance. Being in the Shinjuku district does not mean being beside the Fukutoshin platform.
  • A Metro/Toei pass does not cover JR automatically. A long extra walk can outweigh the benefit of using a pass you already own.

Compare the fare

For several subway journeys, compare Tokyo Subway Ticket with your planned rides. For this trip alone, first check an IC-card or ordinary single fare.

  • The linked Klook overseas-visitor product excludes Japanese passport holders. Check each traveller’s eligibility separately.
  • Distinguish direct gate QR tickets from vouchers requiring a physical-ticket exchange. A payment email alone is not necessarily a valid gate ticket.

At Shinjuku-sanchome, follow the brown F/Fukutoshin signs. Do not confuse them with Marunouchi M09 or the Toei Shinjuku Line S02 in the same complex.

  • Confirm Shibuya F16 in the stopping pattern and travel towards Shibuya. Ikebukuro is the opposite direction for this trip.
  • Check lift routes before descending with luggage. An underground connection between stations is not a promise of a short or wholly step-free walk.

Get off at Shibuya

A 2008 archive view; it does not establish current through services, exits or platform arrangements.

Alight at Shibuya F16, then compare your street destination with the current exit map. Allow time to reach the surface from the deep subway platforms.

  • Some through trains continue onto the Tokyu Toyoko Line. Get off at Shibuya if that is your destination rather than waiting for the train to terminate.
  • Continuing beyond Shibuya requires a separate check of coverage and fare. Through running does not extend a subway pass to the entire route.

Choose a surface meeting point

Decide whether you want the scramble crossing, Hachiko or a particular shopping building before selecting an exit. JR’s Hachiko gate is not simply a numbered Metro exit.

  • Use station names and current signs instead of looking for an old shop or advertisement in an archive photograph.
  • Agree one exact gate or street landmark with your group. Meet outside an unspecified exit is difficult in this large station.

Return to the hotel

For the Fukutoshin return, take an Ikebukuro-direction train that stops at Shinjuku-sanchome. For JR, prepare its separate fare.

  • Old train destination displays are examples, not today’s service. Check the current stopping pattern and the last usable train for your date.
  • If shopping adds bags or everyone is tired, compare the complete walk back to your hotel entrance rather than insisting on the original route.
